• Background

The French Press, patented by Italian designer Attilio Calimani in 1929, is a beloved method for making rich, full-bodied coffee. It brews by steeping coarsely ground beans in hot water, then pressing them with a metal or plastic plunger through a mesh filter. This technique allows natural oils and fine particles to remain in the cup, producing a robust and complex flavor profile. The result is a dense, deeply aromatic coffee that captures the essence of the beans, ideal for those who savor a hearty brew.

  • Requirements

    Coffee Amount:
    15g to 300ml of water
    30g to 600ml of water

    What you need:
    French Press
    Coffee Beans
    Grinder
    Kettle
    Scale
    Timer

    Brew Time: 4 minutes

French press coffee is rich and robust, yet carries a graceful ease. The key is in the finishing touch: pour it out as soon as it's done brewing to avoid any bitterness or gritty texture. Then, enjoy the deep, satisfying flavor of your cup, perfectly brewed in just four minutes.

1) Boil water

Bring enough water to fill the French Press to a boil. Depending on how much coffee and how big your french press is, follow the coffee amounts to water ratio in the next step.

2) Grind and weigh your coffee

While the water is heating, grind your coffee. French press coffee calls for a coarse, even grind. For 15g of coffee you'll need 300ml that serves 1-2 cups of French Press coffee. For more, use 30g of coffee to 600ml of water. Once you grinded your coffee with the desired amount, put the coffee in the press and place it on the scale. Tare it to 0.

3) Bloom the coffee

Gently pour twice the amount of water than you have coffee onto your grounds. For example, if you have 15 grams of coffee, you’ll want to start with 30 grams of water. There is no need to stir the coffee, so long as all the grounds are covered with water. Allow the coffee to bloom for 30 seconds.

4) Pour the remaining water and place the lid gently on the grounds

Don't plunge yet! After placing the list just atop the coffee grounds, time your steep for exactly 4 minutes. Use a timer or your phone!

5) Remove from scale and plunge

If it’s hard to press, that means your grind is too fine; if the plunger moves immediately down without pressure, it means your grind is too coarse.
When you’ve finished pressing, serve the coffee immediately. Don’t let it sit, as this will cause it to continue brewing and over-extract.
